“We may not want to hear the truth today any more than the citizens of Greece did in Diogenes' day. But, can our situation be so dire that neither one honest man nor ten million will be able to save us?” – Beth Bisett
The Many and The Few, a collection of modern American political poetry, offers a tiny sliver of hope for human possibility.
Diogenes takes his lamp in the daytime and goes out looking for a human being in the Agora.
What does he find?
That was the time we weren’t allowed to speak,
and belief policed the streets.
Every movement filmed, recorded, stored.
Every thought controlled.
The light of truth has always been more powerful than all the little Alexanders and their self-elected domination.
After all
Though they blare in every eye and ear,
this Earth is yours, not theirs.
The dogs around Diogenes are eager to go for a walk.
Let’s get going, and bring your lanterns, since where there’s light, there’s a way.
“Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened.” - The Buddha.
Be that flame.

The Many And The Few Poems Book 2 eBook Sam Cherubin
Sam Cherubin is a 21st century American poet with much to say aboutthe crises we find our world in today. In "The Many and the Few"
Cherubin assumes the alter ego of Diogenes the Cynic, whom most of us
know as the beggar who wandered the streets of Athens with his lamp
searching for an honest man.
Beginning with "Commencement" our modern Diogenes opens up a window to
life in the present and the view is bleak. Like the poems of Kipling,
several of Cherubin's poems rhyme cheerfully but with a bite, including
the poem which gives this book its title. With the number of unscrupulous
politicians and social engineers in power now, Cherubin has a massive
amount of corruption to point out to those of us currently being "ruled,
farmed, and fed." We may not want to hear the truth today any more than
the citizens of Greece did in Diogenes' day. But, can our situation be
so dire that neither one honest man nor ten million will be able to save us?
I'm with Cherubin in "Opera Aperta", my favorite poem in this volume.
